The Mythen Adventure Region offers the finest in traditional Swiss folk music. Book your place at a Folklore Show and hear traditional yodel songs and cheery country music accompanied by Schwyzerörgeli, a Swiss type of accordion. Enjoy the dances in folk costume.
Wherever you find Swiss mountains, you will find yodelling. That’s because yodelling originally allowed shepherds to communicate across great distances. Back then, it was done without words; it was only in the 20th century that yodel songs with lyrics and choruses were invented.
At the Folklore Show, you can experience unadulterated Switzerland. Watch as the dance troupe in folk costume perform traditional dances to old yodel songs and country music.
Rural music chapels (‘chapel’ meaning ‘ensemble’ in this context) began being formed as early as the 1800s. It wasn’t until the 1920s that the folk-music chapels also began to conquer the cities. City inhabitants were fascinated by the new folk music, as it exuded a good, cheerful and often merry atmosphere. Today, this ‘Ländlermusik’, or ‘country music’, is preserved as a piece of national cultural heritage.
Folk-dancing is above all practised in folk-costume clubs. They perform their dances predominantly at folk and club celebrations as well as at events celebrating Swiss heritage. One traditional dance is the ‘Bödälä’. It involves rhythmically stomping one’s feet on the floor. The sounds thereby created serve as a rhythmical accompaniment to the live country music.
